What our clients say

I recently had the opportunity to refer a fisheries-related matter to a restorative justice process. What could have been a routine enforcement case became an opportunity for dialogue, accountability, and learning. The individual involved demonstrated genuine remorse and took full responsibility for their actions. The process focused on repairing harm and rebuilding trust rather than punishment.

The outcome was constructive and forward-looking, combining practical steps with a commitment to conservation values. For me, this experience reinforced that enforcement is not always one-size-fits-all—restorative approaches can achieve results that go beyond what a fine ever could.

Seeing someone take responsibility and work toward reconciliation was more impactful than any traditional penalty. I encourage others to consider restorative justice for appropriate cases; it offers flexibility, promotes understanding, and strengthens relationships.

Restorative Justice practices and processes align with the Youth Criminal Justice Act in several ways that meaningfully impact young people.

Within a Restorative Justice process, youth are held accountable through measures that are fair and proportionate to the offence which reinforce respect for societal values, encourage the repair of harm done to victims and community, and are meaningful for the youth. Restorative work, where appropriate, may involve parents, extended family, and/or community and is a timely intervention that reinforces the link between the offending behavior and its consequences, while occurring outside of the courts.
